How to Get Toddlers Excited About Brushing Their Teeth

Teaching toddlers how to brush their teeth is not always an easy task for many parents. Between short attention spans, growing independence, and occasional resistance, getting children to brush twice a day can sometimes feel like an uphill battle.

Fortunately, establishing healthy dental habits doesn’t have to be a constant struggle. With a little creativity, you can make brushing a fun part of your toddler’s daily routine and set the stage for a lifetime of good oral health

Why Early Brushing Habits are Important

While baby teeth eventually fall out, they play a critical role in your child’s development. Healthy primary teeth help children chew food properly, develop clear speech, prevent painful cavities and infections, and build confidence. They also hold space for permanent teeth.

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends brushing twice a day as soon as the first tooth appears. Developing a consistent routine early helps children continue good habits as they grow.

Turn Brushing Into a Game

Toddlers love to play, so consider making brushing part of the fun.

Try pretending that the toothbrush is a spaceship or magic wand and your child needs to chase away tiny invisible monsters. Count each tooth together or set a timer and challenge them to finish brushing before time runs out.

The more imaginative the experience, the more likely your toddler will look forward to brushing.

Play Music While Brushing

Two minutes may seem like forever to a toddler. Play their favorite song or a two-minute brushing tune to help make time pass quickly. Many children’s songs and toothbrushing videos are designed to encourage proper brushing while keeping kids entertained.

Consider dancing while brushing to make the routine even more exciting.

Let Your Toddler Choose Their Toothbrush

Giving children choices helps them feel involved. Take your toddler shopping and let them pick out their own toothbrush, a kid-friendly toothpaste, and a fun toothbrush holder.  When children feel like they have ownership over their brushing supplies, they’re often more excited to use them.

Use a Reward Chart

Positive reinforcement works well for many toddlers.

Create a simple brushing chart and have your child earn a sticker each time they brush in the morning and evening. After achieving a certain number of stickers, give them a reward, such as a trip to the park, family movie night, an extra bedtime story, a small toy, or a craft activity.

The goal is to celebrate consistency, not perfection.

Brush Together

Children naturally imitate their parents, so brushing your teeth alongside your toddler will help demonstrate the importance of oral hygiene. This also gives you the chance to show them proper brushing techniques while making the activity feel like family time.

Consider also taking turns: letting them brush your teeth, then you brush theirs.

Use a Timer

Most toddlers don’t understand how long two minutes really is. Consider using a colorful sand timer, a toothbrush with a built-in timer, a fun phone timer, or an interactive brushing app to provide a clear ending point and help children understand the routine.

Praise Their Effort

Even if your toddler doesn’t brush perfectly, praise their willingness to participate. Tell them how they’ve done a great job brushing their teeth, how proud you are that they are taking care of their teeth, or point out what they did correctly.

Positive encouragement builds confidence and reduces resistance.

Read Books About Brushing

Reading stories about toothbrushing can help toddlers understand the importance of dental hygiene and make the routine feel normal and fun. Many children’s books make brushing seem exciting, as well as relatable.

Keep a Consistent Routine

Toddlers thrive on predictability. Strive to brush at the same times every day after breakfast and before bedtime to make dental hygiene a regular part of your child’s daily schedule. This will make them less likely to resist because they know what to expect.

Avoid Turning Brushing Into a Battle

If your toddler refuses to brush their teeth, try to stay calm and not force the issue. Offering choices, using humor, or taking a short break often works better than creating a stressful situation.

Remember, some days will be easier than others, and consistency, patience, and encouragement will produce better long-term results than pressure or punishment.

Help Your Toddler Build Healthy Dental Habits

Brushing doesn’t have to be a daily struggle. By turning oral hygiene into a fun, engaging activity, whether by singing songs, playing games, or putting up a sticker chart, you can help your toddler enjoy brushing their teeth and develop healthy habits that will last a lifetime.
